Yin Yang Theory for Queers with Alice Sparkly Kat

Join us live December 13, 2024

Recording available to all Steering by Starlight signups

In western capitalist new age culture, yin and yang are often translated as the binary genders of male and female. However, yin yang theory is a historical story. Yin yang theory was invented by gender diverse shamans, survived through patriarchal feudalism, was reinvented under the new culture movement and maoism, and is used as wordplay by Chinese queers everyday. The largest mass arrest of Chinese queers occurred in 2024. If you use yin and yang in your spirituality, then you have a responsibility to uplift the survival of the people who have reinvented and continue to reinvent this framework. What can learning about yin yang theory teach us about allyship with Chinese queers?

Selene’s Initiate: Reenforcing Astrological Foundations by Observing the Moon with Devon Malone

Recording available to all Steering by Starlight signups

After nearly two straight years of dedicated prayers to Selene (The Moon), Malone and partner Katy have come to understand her as a wise and eager teacher of many of our foundational astrology concepts. Astrology has become a way to see the web of individuality that lives inside every one of us, while simultaneously exposing the interconnectedness of all the world around us.

In this talk, Malone introduces their process of observing Selene and how it reinforces speed, aspect doctrine, and other foundational concepts. He offers helpful guidance for anyone who wants to start their own devotional lunar practice. Devon also discusses recent translations by Dr. Ali A Olomi from the Islamic period and how he’d like to further the study of Selene’s singular techniques from that period.

Locational Astrology and Land Spirits: Enchant the Earth with Astra Najma

What does a locational astrologer do?? How can we stay in touch with sites of home that are far away from us? When we place ourselves in different locations, what changes about our relationship to the land and the land’s current and prior inhabitants? A wide-ranging talk for a delightful evening of thought provoking discussion. As with all astrology, we can use these tools when vacation planning or when connecting to the deep longing for home. The application of it is up to you.

Astra is currently doing research on the intersection of locational astrology and liberating the land from occupation and environmental violence.

Joy Carter is a white, queer, cis, mostly able bodied, and pretty Dionysian gal, who’s deeply into mythology, storytelling, and getting into the deep stuff. Joy serves her community as both clergy and as a diviner: facilitating ritual, reading tarot, and working with a local oracular group as both an oracle and a facilitator. When she’s not doing this sort of work, she loves dancing, writing with friends, and playing a few too many video games.

Looking for help with ‘spiritual or energetic hygiene’ can be overwhelming. So many options! So many baths, oils, meditations, visualizations, incense blends…I certainly can’t keep up with all that! Caring for and supporting myself in my work as community clergy and a diviner has required me to build a toolbox that’s effective, authentic, and sustainable for a femme who’s never mastered the secret of the elusive ‘daily practice.’

In this workshop, we’ll take a look at how to fine-tune just how far out into the aether we fly, how to make sure we come home safely, and how to build effective rituals for ourselves around and between those active practices.

Astrology, Queer Ancestors, and Utopian Memory: For When the Here and Now is Not Enough with Elly Higgins

What does it mean to honor our queer ancestors? At a time when corporations and politicians can name drop Sylvia Rivera in the same breath that they invest in policies that harm living queer people, what might it look like to more authentically connect with a queer lineage? How can we utilize astrology as a powerful tool in this ancestor work?

In his influential book, Cruising Utopia, José Esteban Muñoz writes that “queerness exists for us as an ideality that can be distilled from the past and used to imagine a future.”  Taking this as our starting point, how might we use astrology as a form of queer time to thoughtfully engage with our queer ancestors in order to build out a lineage and chosen family and imagine a better, more livable future.

Your IC Signature with Pallas Augustine

Where are you, right now? And who are you in that place? Geographically, ecologically, magically, psychologically, relationally, directionally: location is at the heart of any astrological chart, any experience, yet where and who are often the most overlooked data points as we focus on the what why and how. Where are you rooted and and to whom are you tethered, right now?

Our IC Signature, as explored in Pallas’ forthcoming, successfully crowdfunded book ‘The IC: An Astrology of Coming Home’ offers us a deep layer of astrological perspective on where we are rooted and to whom we are tethered.

Come to Pallas’ workshop with your journal and pens, notes app, whatever supports you being warm, comfy, and grounded, ready to reflect and (re)consider the ways you understand your IC, who and where you’ve been, and who you are where you are now.

The first portion of the workshop will prioritize more personal reflection, and the second will prioritize collective (and optional!) sharing.
